NCC HISTORY

NCC was introduced in Bihar in the year 1948 and was organised as a Circle HQ and Units, with a small strength of 1,950 Senior Division cadets and 4,050 Junior Division cadets. On 10 October 1961, Station HQ NCC was raised at Boring Canal Road, which covered Magadh, Mithila and Bhojpur Regions. This establishment is now known as NCC Gp HQ Patna.

In 1963, the strength of the cadets rose considerably as NCC training was made compulsory. To streamline the organisation and coordinate the training activities, on 15 January 1963, the Circle HQ NCC was re-designated as NCC Directorate and Brig AS Sodhi was posted as the first Director. In the same year Group HQs were raised at Gaya and Bhagalpur. In 1965, 2 Bihar Battalion NCC was established under NCC Group HQ Muzaffarpur and in the subsequent year, NCC Group HQ Ranchi was raised.

With realisation of the effectiveness of NCC as a critical establishment contributing towards Nation building, and its resultant growth in the State, the leadership of the Directorate was upgraded to rank of Major General with effect from 01 October 2011.

HQ NCC Directorate Bihar was housed in a building constructed in 1986 as a project for NCC on Rajendra Path, Patna. Consequent to the formation of State of Jharkhand, on 15 Nov 2000, the HQ was re-christened as HQ NCC Directorate Bihar & Jharkhand. In 2016, NCC Gp HQ Hazaribagh became operational.

Presently, NCC Directorate Bihar & Jharkhand comprises of six Groups, which have a total of 50 NCC Units under them, spread across 38 districts of Bihar and 24 districts of Jharkhand, imparting NCC training to an enrolled strength of 98,148 cadets.
